LITERALLY EVERY LESBIAN I KNOW HAS LIVED THE EXACT SAME LIFE
Video work, 2021
The juxtaposition between societal demonization and fetishization of lesbians is the driving force behind Dare’s work; ideologies found throughout all aspects of life such as the media’s predatory lesbian trope and the porn industry. Dare’s art practice acknowledges her identity as not a male fantasy nor a dirty immorality, but rather hers to define, enabling her to take ownership of her attraction to women and accept it as a natural part of her mind and body. Through her work she reclaims control over the tainted narrative of both platonic and sexual intimacy.
Her project ‘Literally Every Lesbian I Know Has Lived the Exact Same Life’ investigates how being a lesbian (or queer without attraction to men) affects experiences of intimacy and relationships. The work is consistent of three medias: video, audio, and book. Each corresponding piece features content from 25 phone call conversations between the artist and lesbian participants, created intentionally absent of figure visuals to draw focus to the substance. ‘Literally Every Lesbian I Know Has Lived the Exact Same Life’s’ 8-hour film and audio create a unique listening space for lesbians to exist organically without fear of fetishization or demonisation. The film is intended to be a durational piece revealing an ongoing conversation with no beginning or ending which cannot be interrupted.
